Fornells also enjoys some of the best waters for wind surfing on the island. There is a pleasure boat offering trips around the port along with a firm with smaller boats to hire for your own adventures!
Monte Toro
Monte Toro is Menorca’s highest point. From here you can see
the whole island and even Mallorca in the distance. During the Renaissance, a beautiful church and convent were built here both of which exist intact today. There is still a lovely little courtyard with an olive tree and a sixteenth century well. Those of you who fancy trekking up to the summit by bike or on foot will appreciate the café/restaurant at the top with panoramic views from the terrace!
Also other places of particular interest are Binibeca Vell, Cales Coves, Cala Pregonda, Son Bou, Cami d’en Kane . . . and many more.

Fornells
Fornells is a little way along the northern coast not far from ‘La Sabina’ is the pretty village of Fornells with its white houses, a beautiful promenade lined with palm trees and the 5km long natural port. It has always been a fishing village and now has many lovely restaurants specialising in both fish and lobster. It is rumoured that the King of Spain, Juan Carlos visits Fornells for his lobster lunch occasionally at the restaurant ‘Es Pla’, but we’ve never managed to time our visits when he has been there!
There is a scuba diving centre in Fornells and you can hire bicycles.
Maó
Maó, named by the Carthaginians in the third century BC, is full of history with many buildings and squares of historic value. It is made up of beautiful narrow streets with architecture
from all its many past ruling
nations. The dramatic harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world, after Pearl Harbour. There are reasonably priced trips of varying lengths around the harbour. Maó also has the attraction of many shops, markets, museums, art galleries, churches, bars and restaurants from the upper pedestrian walkways all the way down to the port.
Mahon’s market is worth a visit in the high town in the Plaça d’Esplanada on Saturdays all year but also on Tuesdays in the summer season.
Ciutadella
Ciutadella is the original capital of Menorca. Like Maó it is steeped in history, mainly from Spanish, French, English and Moorish rules. The twentieth century has not spoilt this picturesque town. Places of particular interest would be the ‘Ses Voltes’ – the pedestrian arches along the main street – the harbour, the cathedral, the Salord Palace and the main square (Plaça des Born).
