Drink
Gin is the local speciality tipple! – the locals drink it with bitter lemon producing a thirst quenching drink known as ‘pomade’.
It can be bought in most shops and supermarkets, but a trip to the ‘Xoriguer’ gin factory down in the port of Mahon is well worth a trip. Entry is free, as is sampling!
Food
Traditionally Menorca is an agricultural island and most local foods are based on fresh products of the season, but also being an island there is a tradition of fish and seafood.
For meat eaters, lamb, chicken and cooked meats are the local specialities. Fresh bread and olives are everywhere.
There is a Menorcan cheese and although there is a general theme to the cheese it is produced with some individuality in many different Menorcan towns. Trying the different types and strengths can be fun.
You have the best of both worlds in Menorca either using the supermarkets for quick and easy convenience or by using the smaller local shops and markets with their own particular atmosphere and flavour.
Mayonnaise is the island’s culinary invention – named after Mahon/Maó.
